Vesuvius Day and Ancient Wine in Pompeii

August 24 marks the anniversary of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, which destroyed Pompeii and Herculaneum. The archaeological excavation of Pompeii has provided extraordinary insight into Roman drinking culture, including the discovery of thermopolia, ancient fast-food and wine bars where Romans could purchase hot and cold food and wine by the cup. Over eighty thermopolia have been identified in Pompeii, suggesting that wine service was deeply integrated into everyday Roman urban life. Amphorae found across the site reveal the range of wine origins traded in the Roman world, from local Italian production to imports from Greece, Spain, and North Africa. The preservation of Pompeii under volcanic ash has made it one of the most important archaeological records of ancient alcohol culture ever discovered.
